Implementation of the investment project “Development of Virtual Electronic Heritage System” ends in July 31, 2012. This important project forLithuaniaand world is continuation of already conducted project in the period 2005-2008 (author and project leader Dr. Regina Varnienė-Janssen).

The conference, dedicated for discussion of project (Development of Virtual Electronic Heritage System) results took place inVilniuson June 20. The conference was attended by project management team and staff of the National Library (project initiator and executor), coordinators of nine project partners and employees, representatives of honoured guests of other country's cultural heritage-related institutions.

The conference was welcomed by Deputy Director General of the Information Society Development Committee Ieva Žilionienė, senior specialist of Information Society Development Division of the Ministry of Culture Erika Buivydienė and Director General of the National Library prof. Dr. Renaldas Gudauskas.

The beginning of this project was when The National Library initiated preparation of strategic document “The Concept for Digitization of the Lithuanian Cultural Heritage”, adopted by the Lithuanian Government in 2005. It consolidated a new paradigm for partnership between memory institutions. This allowed the appeal to the EU Structural Funds for financial support. Thus the joint-project (Development of Virtual Electronic Heritage System) of the National Library,LithuanianArt Museumand The Office of the Chief Archivist ofLithuaniastarted. It was the first such project inEurope, received financial support from EU Structural Funds. Later (in 2006) The National Library initiated another document “The Strategy for Digitization of Lithuanian Cultural Heritage, Digital Content Preservation and Access”; it was adopted by the Government of theRepublicofLithuania(in 2009) and received funding from EU structural funds and national budget. Thus continuation of the project has started in 2010. Programme for Information Society Development inLithuaniafor 2011-2019 indicates that creation of digitized content of cultural heritage and its’ dissemination remains one of the most important priorities of culture and information society.

Concluding the conference Dr. R. Varnienė-Jannsen emphasized that the joint work results are excellent; virtual electronic heritage system is created, enabling to integrate a variety of digitized content as well as ensuring long-term preservation and convenient dissemination.

Web-portal www.epaveldas.lt is currently based on semantic search; consequently it is convenient and similar to beloved Google. Thus co-created digitized content of cultural heritage will be widely used not only in our country but also around the world.
