Presentation of book “Silvija Vėlavičienė. In the Track of the Forbidden Press” for parliament members of Lithuanian World Community
The book “Silvija Vėlavičienė. In the Track of the Forbidden Press” was presented for parliament members of Lithuanian World Community and the National Library staff on August 8.
The texts reveal essential changes in press and publishing, determined by political processes related to regaining freedom of speech, collapse of press censorship, returning of cultural heritage of Lithuanian emigration.
The book also witnesses historical events of the end of the XX c. – the beginning of the XXI c. in the National Library, presenting in details processes related to formation and promotion of Lithuanian emigration press collection.
Many world-Lithuanians were acquainted with Silvija and warmly remembered her during the meeting. Australian- Lithuanian community member Gabrielius Žemkalnis summarizing everyone’s thoughts, called S. Vėlavičienė as a book smuggler and chronicler of Lithuanian World Community, who with all her heart gathered and disseminated World-Lithuanian cultural heritage.
