The budget resources were made up of the annual Government grant-in-aid (96,95%), the receipt of priced services (2,18%) and grants provided by foundations and individual persons (0,87%). For the constructing of the new Annex to the Library the sum of 8 572 200 Litas (2 484,7€) was received from the Government and because of this rate the growth of Library's budget is 36% in comparison with the year 2001. The total number of employees was 510 including 376 qualified librarians and specialists.
Building The installation of the equipment and mounting works in the Annex to the main building of the Library were continued in 2002. The transportation and security systems started to be installed, the Centre of the Document Conservation and Restoration has moved to the new offices in the 2nd floor of the Annex. Because of the upraised differences between the old and new parts of the building the reconstructing works of the older parts were in progress. The newspaper and art literature reading rooms were closed for repairs and opened for the public in the renovated premises.
Acquisitions The collections of the Library were expanded by the accession of 65 394 items and 18 569 titles of documents during the reporting year. Out of this total the following percentage and quantity of publications were acquired according to separate sources: 11,2 % (7 317) - domestic and foreign exchange48,5 % (31 743) - legal deposit 28,5 % (18 657) - gifts 9 % (5 882) - purchases from booksellers and publishers 2,8 % (1 795) - subscription of periodicals
30,4% of acquisitions budget was allotted for the purchasing of books, 51% - for serials, 18,6% - for other documents. Documents received by legal deposit made up 48,5% of the total accessions. 3 Lithuanian and 8 foreign electronic databases have been subscribed. A database EBSCO Publishing was the most popular among others. The National Library and other Lithuanian libraries received a grant from the Open Society Institute for the subscription of this database. Reader Services In 2002 the Library provided 29 256 registered users including 8 554 new registered during the reporting year with 1 313,0 thousand items of documents. 54,3% of the users were students, researchers and specialists made up 23,3%. 365 501 visits were made to the Library. The Library started to work on an extension of the electronic services made available to users. According to the statistical surveys there were 104 thousand users of electronic information in the reading rooms of Information Centre. The Library's reading rooms housed 621 reader desks and 63 out of them computerised. In 2002 the system of unified readers card for 6 Lithuanian libraries was implemented.
Storage and Preservation The conservation and restoration measures were primarily reserved for the collections of manuscripts, old and rare Lithuanian and foreign books. 19 314 single pages were restored, binding work and repairs were performed on 2 999 documents. Following the recommendations of the Library's Scientific Board a concept of periods of the old Lithuanian book was determined for the Library's collections. Documents published till 1905 were transferred from the collections of the former Lituanica department to the stocks of the Rare Book and Manuscript Department. A big work was done in treatment and conservation of the rare book collection from XVI century. Microfilming of Lithuanian serials has continued in 2002, total of 19 titles of old and current serials were microfilmed in cooperation with the Library of Congress and Norman Ross publishing Ltd.
IT and New Technology The following targets were achieved during the year under review: Creation of the bibliographical data bank of the articles from Lithuanian press. The main tasks of the project is to create the system of shared cataloguing of articles and in cooperation with other Lithuanian libraries to integrate all the information resources in one data bank. Creation of the database of electronic resources. The special harvesting technology has been adapted for the selection and archiving in the Library's server of the web pages and sites with domain "lt" (3 Mio records total) and other sites related to Lithuania. Next stage of the project is the cataloguing of these records. Special agreements with the publishers that determine the preparation of and access to the electronic resources were prepared and negotiations with the publishers started. Implementation of Readers Admission Subsystem of LIBIS in 6 Lithuanian libraries, i.e. the National Library, the Library of Medicine, the Technical Library, Kaunas, Šiauliai and Utena Public Libraries. Creation of the software for LIBIS Interlibrary Loan and Publishing subsystems.
At the end of 2002 there were 47 Lithuanian research and public libraries that have installed and implemented Library system LIBIS and its software. Throughout the year workshops and training courses were held in which qualified librarians were introduced to the principles of work in this system. 73 thousand records prepared by 50 libraries were added to LIBIS Union Catalogue http://www.libis.lt, which contained 407 thousand records at the end of 2002. 395 thousand requests were delivered to the Union Catalogue during the year.
Cultural Activities. International Relations.In 2002, 176 exhibitions were organised by the Library. Three exhibitions presented Lithuanian culture and revealed the unique documents of Library's collections were on display in Germany during the Frankfurt Book Fair in 2002 where Lithuania was invited as a honour guest. An exhibition of the Jewish books and posters from Vilna Ghetto (1941-1943) was opened in the Frankfurt Jewish Museum, an exposition of German books held by the National Library of Lithuania was presented in Frankfurt City and University Library. The cultural centre in Wiesbaden together with the National Library of Lithuania organised the presentation of the most beautiful Lithuanian books. The Library continues to develop cooperation relationships with the National Libraries, library institutions and organisations. The main events in 2002 that stimulated further development of international relations were the joining the Consortium of European Research Libraries CERL as a full member and signing of the cooperation agreement with the National Library of Croatia.
