IT and New Technology

The following targets were achieved during the year under review:

  1. Creation of the bibliographical data bank of the articles from Lithuanian press. The main tasks of the project is to create the system of shared cataloguing of articles and in cooperation with other Lithuanian libraries to integrate all the information resources in one data bank.

  2. Creation of the database of electronic resources. The special harvesting technology has been adapted for the selection and archiving in the Library's server of the web pages and sites with domain "lt" (3 Mio records total) and other sites related to Lithuania. Next stage of the project is the cataloguing of these records. Special agreements with the publishers that determine the preparation of and access to the electronic resources were prepared and negotiations with the publishers started.

  3. Implementation of Readers Admission Subsystem of LIBIS in 6 Lithuanian libraries, i.e. the National Library, the Library of Medicine, the Technical Library, Kaunas, Šiauliai and Utena Public Libraries.

  4. Creation of the software for LIBIS Interlibrary Loan and Publishing subsystems.

At the end of 2002 there were 47 Lithuanian research and public libraries that have installed and implemented Library system LIBIS and its software. Throughout the year workshops and training courses were held in which qualified librarians were introduced to the principles of work in this system. 73 thousand records prepared by 50 libraries were added to LIBIS Union Catalogue http://www.libis.lt, which contained 407 thousand records at the end of 2002. 395 thousand requests were delivered to the Union Catalogue during the year.
