Martynas Mazvydas National Library of Lithuania (NLL) was founded in 1919. It is a principal Lithuanian research library open to the public and is simultaneously functioning as a parliamentary library.
Activities- Collection development, legislation and management of the national cultural heritage;
- National archive of Lithuanian documents, both printed and in other forms, received by legal deposit;
- Centre of national bibliography and registration of Lithuanian publications;
- Centre of assignment and registration of international book, serial and music standard numbers;
- Centre of expertise in preservation and restoration;
- Centre of Lithuanian Integrated Library Information System (LIBIS) and Union Catalogue of Lithuanian libraries;
- Co-ordination centre of Lithuanian library research and development.
HoldingsAbout 7 million items and 2 million titles amounting to more than 77 km shelving of library material. Library embraces special collections including medieval manuscripts and archival documents, old and rare books, Lituanica publications, music records and fine-art publications, children's books.
Library servicesNLL resources are available to Lithuanian and foreign citizens without restrictions. These holdings serve to satisfy research, educational, informational and cultural requirements of the users. Library statistics of 2009: - NLL collections - 6 789 304 physical units;
- Registered users - 18 455;
- Visitors 155 654;
- Document loan - 1 236 718 documents.
Library ensures access to the collections of books, periodicals, serials and reference material, manuscripts, microforms, audio and video documents, old and rare books, CDs, documents of international organisations, local and Internet databases. Exhibitions, conferences, meetings and other events are being permanently mounted for the public. Library specialists provide qualified information and consultations verbally or in written form, by telephone, fax and e-mail. The library staff numbers 510 employees.
