Exhibition “Encounters. NYLA Portraits”

15.01.2019 – 15.03.2019

Journalism, like no other profession, is special in the way it allows you to meet another person. A microphone changes the atmosphere between two strangers. They start talking.

As creators of NYLA, the first professional podcast in Lithuania, we seek to meet people whose stories allow our listeners to better understand modern existence. A young Muslim woman, challenging the Western preconceptions of Islam; a literature professor who survived the Holocaust; a poet who was sent to a psychiatric hospital and escaped it; a woman who is a member of Alcoholics Anonymous; a Lithuanian Roma teenager, reclaiming his social status through dance. A year of podcast production has resulted into more than 60 episodes. In all of them we tried to comprehend our society’s differences and similarities. In this exhibition, we share some of our interviews.

Podcasts often called “this generation’s radio”, is an audio medium. However each NYLA episode is also presented with unique portraits of our interviewees, so listeners can see the person they are hearing if they choose to. Working independently and funded by our listener community via Patreon, we seek to offer a playful and intimate look at the people whose voices you are hearing.

Nyla was the name of the character of the very first documentary film “Nanook of the North”. In Arabic the name Nyla means “winner”. Today, when people are more divided and lonelier than previous generations, the ability to meet and truly hear one another is, indeed, a victory.
