10 May: Meeting with prof. David Fishman and his book presentation

The Judaica Research Centre continues its series of events “Hashavat aveda – To Return What Was Lost”, dedicated to the fate of Jewish cultural heritage in the XX – XXI centuries. A meeting will be held on 10th May at 18:00 with the renowned historian David Fishman, the professor of history at the Jewish Theological Seminary (New York). As an author of many important works on Jewish cultural history, he became especially prominent in 2017 after publishing his book “The Book Smugglers: Partisans, Poets, and the Race to Save Jewish Treasures from the Nazis“, which won the prestigious National Jewish Book Award.

This work, grounded in the author’s meticulous years-long research, describes the dramatic, almost unbelievable circumstances that led to the preservation of Jewish cultural treasures in the Vilna ghetto, and is particularly important for the history of Vilnius. The book also discusses the journey of these important objects after the war. This invaluable heritage also makes up a large part of the Judaica collection of the Lithuanian National Library.

This year, a Lithuanian translation of the book was published by the publishing house “Baltos Lankos”. The first presentation of this translation will take place at the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania. The book’s author, David Fishman, will be interviewed by Dr. Darius Staliūnas (Lithuanian Institute of History). Representatives of “Baltos Lankos” will participate at the event.

The event will be held in English with simultaneous translation into Lithuanian.
