Exploring Vilnius in the Exhibition “URBS: People and Books”

The Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania kindly invites you to the exhibition “URBS: People and Books”, a journey through the history of Vilnius press. In this exhibition, Vilnius is seen as the most important center of book printing and dissemination in the Grand Duchy of Lithuania which shaped the city’s cultural, religious and economic life. It reveals the most important printing events in Vilnius in the early modern period, highlighting the more interesting and significant cases and providing a glimpse behind the scenes of printing in different times.

The book is the main character of this exhibition. It is surrounded by authors, publishers, sellers, readers, owners and keepers. The bustling world of printing houses in Vilnius was a vibrant intellectual space, a place where multiple ideas were disseminated, creating a rich cultural network beyond the city and country. In spite of ever-present adversity, Vilnius had remained a center of cultural diversity and its dissemination.

In order to learn more about Vilnius as a city of creators and their books, we invite you to participate in the public lectures by historian Dr. Reda Griškaitė, book conservator Ieva Rusteikaitė and historian Agnė Suchodolskytė.

The opening of the exhibition will be held on 4 October, 17:30 in the 3rd floor atrium of National Library. Many distinguished guests will be present, including Dr. Jolanta Budriūnienė, Director of the Documentary Heritage Research Department of the National Library of Lithuania, Dr. Liudas Jovaiša, Associate Professor of History at Vilnius University, as well as the curators of the exhibition, Dr. Milda Kvizikevičiūtė, Agnė Suchodolskytė and Dr. Viktorija Vaitkevičiūtė. Actress Eglė Agota Matulytė will be the host of the event. The opening will also feature clarinet and accordion music by Ignas Daniulis and Agnė Dūkštaitė.
