Family Event: “A Year with Denmark: The World of Hans Christian Andersen’s Fairy Tales”

On May 9 as we celebrate the Year with Denmark, we invite you to an event for children aged 5–12 and their adults, where we will immerse ourselves in the world of stories by the famous Danish fairy-tale writer.

At the event, we will invite children and grown ups to participate in creative workshops led by educators from the Children’s and Youth Literature Centre and a representative of the Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. Participants will also have the opportunity to take part in a “Kahoot” quiz about Andersen’s fairy tales and win great prizes. And at the end of the event, we will invite everyone to a screening of animated films based on Andersen’s fairy tales.

Program   

12:00 – Opening remarks by Aušrinė Žilinskienė, Director General of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania, and Grete Sillasen, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Denmark to Lithuania   

12:15–14:00 Workshops: 

  • Creative workshops, “Kahoot” quiz – Cinema, 5th floor 
  • Creative workshops based on the fairy tale “The Emperor’s Nightingale.” Led by educators Eglė Gudonytė and Julija Charsika  – Leisure area, 5th floor
  • Creative workshop: “Make a paper cutout, discover an old Danish tradition.” Led by Ekaterina Solholm Jensen, representative of the Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania – Education Lab - Laimė Lukošiūnienė Hall, 5th floor 

14:00–14:40  Animated films based on Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales “The Little Mermaid,” “The Ugly Duckling,” and “The Snow Queen” – Conference Hall, 5th floor 

Activities conducted in English will be translated into Lithuanian. Admission is free. Everyone is welcome!

In 2026, marking the 35th anniversary of Denmark’s recognition of Lithuania’s restoration of independence, the National Library of Lithuania, together with the Embassy of the Kingdom of Denmark in Lithuania and the Danish Cultural Institute in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania, is organizing a series of events “A Year with Denmark: Bridges of Culture and Solidarity” and invites people to reflect on the friendship between our countries, which has lasted for more than three decades, and to get to know our friend Denmark better.
