A new Scientific Council of the National Library has been formed

The Scientific Council of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania is an advisory body, the purpose of which is to advise the Director General of the National Library on strategic issues of management, research and development. The Research Council also helps to address other operational issues and contributes to the implementation of the main objectives of the National Library. After the end of the term of office of the representatives of the Ministry of Culture, Vilnius University, the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, the Lithuanian National Commission for UNESCO, and the Lithuanian Research Libraries Association for the period of 2018–2021, the new Council was formed. It includes:

  • Rimantas Mikaitis – Ministry of Culture, Vice-Minister.
  • Dr. Rūta Pileckaitė-Vasilienė – Ministry of Culture, Head of Memory Institutions Policy Group. 
  • Prof. Dr. Jūras Banys – Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, President.
  • Prof. Dr. Romas Baronas – Chairman of the Research Council of Lithuania.
  • Prof. Habil. Dr. Gintautas Dzemyda – Director of the Institute of Data Science and Digital Technologies of Vilnius University.
  • Dr. Vydas Dolinskas – Director of the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania, National Museum.
  • Monika Garbačiauskaitė-Budrienė – Director General of LRT.
  • Gytis Lukšas – film director, winner of the National Culture and Art Prize.
  • Prof. Dr. Lauras Bielinis – political scientist, Vytautas Magnus University.
  • Assoc. Prof. Dr. Virgis Valentinavičius – political scientist, Mykolas Romeris University, Institute of Communication.

The Council is composed of ten members - two representatives of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Lithuania, one of whom is the Vice-Minister of Culture, and eight representatives of institutions or organisations related to the strategic areas of activity, interests, partnership or cooperation agreements of the National Library.

Scientific Council is a collegial advisory body.  Its purpose is to act as an expert and consultant on library activities and development. The decisions of the Council are of a recommendatory nature.
