Publications for Learning Lithuanian: Resources for Learners at Different Levels

The collection of the Lituanistics Reading Room at the Lithuanian National Martynas Mažvydas Library has been enriched with new publications designed for non-native speakers learning Lithuanian.

Whether you are just beginning to learn Lithuanian or are already able to communicate in the language, carefully selected learning materials can help you improve your language skills, expand your vocabulary, and use Lithuanian more confidently in everyday situations.

To assess your Lithuanian language proficiency level, you may find useful the methodological textbook published this year, Lietuvių kalbos A1–B2 lygių testai užsieniečiams su vertinimo instrukcijomis Lithuanian Language A1-B2 Level Tests for Non-Native Speakers (with Assessment Instructions). The publication is based on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and is intended to help determine learners’ Lithuanian language proficiency more objectively. The book explains the system of language proficiency levels, outlines the structure of examinations, and provides information on assessment principles. Assessment instructions are available in Lithuanian, English, and Ukrainian. This publication will be valuable both for foreign learners of Lithuanian and for their teachers.

Learn to speak Lithuanian is a comprehensive guide for those who are just beginning to learn the language. The book takes learners step by step from the first letters of the alphabet to the ability to communicate in everyday situations. Lithuanian grammar and language structure are explained in a simple, clear, and systematic way. The publication is adapted for English-speaking learners. 

Those wishing to improve their Lithuanian listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills at the A2 and B2 levels may benefit from the publications Don’t Stop Halfway (Nesustok pusiaukelėje) and Let’s Improve (Tobulėkime), published by the LINGUA LITUANICA Language and Culture Institute. The books cover a wide range of topics, including everyday life, leisure, communication, traditions, health, education, and more. Each thematic section includes grammar, vocabulary, and language-use exercises, short review texts, and various activities designed to reinforce learning. 

Reading as much as possible is essential when learning a language. For this purpose, the graded readers prepared and published by linguist Sebastiano D. Cutillo and his team are particularly useful. For beginner (A2) learners, Lithuanian short stories for beginners is recommended. Learners at a higher level can choose Lithuanian short stories for intermediate (B1) skill level and Lithuanian short stories for upper intermediate (B2) skill level. These books contain engaging short stories designed to improve reading skills, expand vocabulary, and reinforce key grammar rules. Each story is followed by a glossary and reading-comprehension questions in English. 

Racconti in Lituano is a reader intended for beginner and intermediate learners of Lithuanian, especially Italian speakers. The book consists of short stories, each followed by comprehension questions. All texts are translated into Italian.
