Commemoration of the Constitution of the Ukrainian Cossack Nation at the National Library

We kindly invite you to participate in the commemoration of the Constitution of the Ukrainian Cossack Nation of 1710 that will take place on the 26th of October, 2022, at 14:00 in the Statehood Centre of the Martynas Mažvydas National Library of Lithuania.

Sergiy Holovaty, Acting President of the Ukrainian Constitutional Court, will present a unique copy of the 1710 Constitution, written in four languages – Old Slavic, Latin, Ukrainian and English. The Ukrainian Ambassador in Lithuania, Petro Beshta, historian Prof. Dr. Alfredas Bumblauskas, lawyer Prof. Dr. Dainius Žalimas and the Director General of the National Library, Prof. Dr. Renaldas Gudauskas will also attend the event.

The Constitution of The Ukrainian Cossack Nation of 1710 is also known by the name of then Ukrainian Cossak Hetman – Pylyp Orlyk. It is the most important part of the Ukrainian national constitutional heritage, that gave rise to the constitutional traditions of the contemporary Ukrainian state and which represents a distinctive national constitutional Ukrainian identity, based in values that are opposed to those of Russia.

The main value is freedom – both the liberation from the oppression of Moscovy, personal liberty and the equal rights of all citizens (Cossacks) in their own land. The other value – the Republic as a form of government, because the Constitution was a contract for the common management of Cossack society, guaranteed by the Hetman, which meant the rejection of authoritarian rule.

These principles are also the basis of Ukraine's current struggle for freedom against the same aggressor, which still holds on to the tradition of mascolic despotism.

We invite you to participate!
